Description and Holding Information
1919-23, Chinese Supreme Court Decisions
The Chinese Supreme Court Decisions. (Relating to General Principles of Civil law, obligation, and Commercial Law.) Translated by F. T. Cheng
(Lond.). Published by The Commission on Extra-Territoriality (Peking 1923). Approximately 260 p., variously paginated. Contents include, in English, the
Prefaces, a Foreword and an Explanation; tables on contents; principles derived from Supreme Court decisions in outline form, Civil Law (General
Principles and Obligations) and Commercial Law. (The preface states: “During the years 1919 and 1920 the Supreme Court selected what may be styled the Chinese
Leading Cases and asked Dr. F. T. Cheng to translate them into English. This was published in 1920 by the Supreme Court, thus forming, as it were, a
code of case law. The Commission on Extraterritoriality decided that such a compilation and translation would be a valuable addition to the formal
codes themselves as explaining and expanding the letter of the written law. As the first translations did not cover all the Leading Cases, the Commission
asked Dr. Cheng to continue the translation of the cases selected by the Supreme Court, thus as far as possible covering the sphere of civil law as
shown by the Decisions of the Supreme Court. This he has done with much learning and ability, and the results of his labours are published as one of the
English documents of the Commission.”)
