The Effects of Integration on Rural Indian Pupils, by Harold J. Miller. Published by U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Office of
Education, Bureau of Research (Washington 1968). xxi + 140 p. Contents include a Summary; chapters including the Introduction, Review of Related
Literature, Methodology and Procedures, Analysis and Results, and Conclusions and Implications; with 75 tables; a bibliography (pp. 134-140); and three
Appendixes. The Summary described this study “to investigate the influence of integrating Indian pupils in predominantly non-Indian schools”; using the
sample of “704 grade nine pupils located in six Reservation Areas in or adjacent to North Dakota”; with a study of achievement, intelligence, alienation,
attitude toward school and social relationships “to determine any changes which results with the integration of Indian pupils.” Cultural variables
included in the analysis included the education levels of father and mother, socio-economic status, parental employment status, age of pupil, degree of
drinking problem of those with parental responsibility, and pre-school language. The 75 tables report assessments of Indian pupils; analysis of
variances among groups of pupils; and relationship of cultural variables to measures for achievement of Indian resident and transfer pupils, and non-Indian
resident pupils; and degree of social acceptance by non-Indian resident pupils of Indian pupils from integrated and segregated schools in a general
school situation.
