Weil, Legal Status of the Indian, 1888
The Legal Status of the Indian, by Robert Well. Published at New York (1888). 76 p. Contents include 32 sections arranged in two Parts: I, Relation
of the Indians to the Sovereignty of the United States; and II, Relation of the Indians to the Government, National and Commonwealth; and a list of
cases cited (with citations), a list of authorities consulted, and an introduction. (From the title page: “Written in part fulfilment of the conditions
necessary to obtain the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, School of Political Science, Columbia College, New York.” The text begins, “In the following
essay, I have endeavored to classify and present in a succinct form the body of law which governs the relations of the Indians. From this investigation,
I have omitted the status of the five civilized nations of the Indian Territory. They occupy a distinct position; their relations could not well be
brought under the classification of those of their more savage brethren, and require a separate discussion.”)
