1831-02-08, Articles of Agreement Made and Concluded at the City of Washington
Articles of Agreement between the United States and the Menomonee Nation of Indians, February 8, 1831, 7 Stat. 342-348. ( Articles of Agreement
between the United States and the Menomonee Nation of Indians in which the Menominees cede land to the United States for the New York Indians. The First
Article of the Agreement describes the boundaries of the cession and declares the Indians are under the protection of the United States. The Indians
were granted the right to hunt and fish on the land they ceded on the east side of the Fox River until the President offers the land for sale. They
received $5,000 when the agreement was concluded and $5,000 annually thereafter. They also were to receive $6,000 in a form the President shall determine
is most beneficial to the Indians. A supplement to the agreement provided for the President to determine the timeline for the removal and settlement
of the New York Indians. The agreement was ratified by Congress with the Proviso that the improvements made on the lands ceded by the Menomonees should
not exceed $20,000. The agreement was concluded on February 8, 1831 and the supplement on February 17, 1831. Both were concluded at Washington, D.C.)
