1754-10-21, Gov. Shirley to Gov. Morris recommending a union of the colonies and the treaty of neutrality with the Six Nations (MS)
Wrapper: October 21, 1754. Letter from Governor Shirley to Governor Morris, Gov. Delaney in his letters had owned that a treaty of neutrality was
concluded with the Conowagos by the government of New York recommending to me to press for a Union of the Colonies. Shirley's letter was written in
Boston. He congratulated Morris on his assumption of the role of Governor of Pennsylvania. He had no experience in managing a Quaker Assembly, so had
no suggestions. Shirley encouraged Morris to get behind the idea of a union of the colonies, especially for mutual defense. Governor Delaney of New
York had in fact made a treaty of neutrality with the Conawagos, but Shirley thought it would have been much better to have all the colonies be part of
it. He would be happy to communicate with Morris and would send a copy of a conference he had with the eastern Indians. (Digitized from material
held at the American Philosophical Society)
