Christian, Origins of Parliament and Privileges of the Commons, 1810
|
|
A concise account of the origin of the two houses of Parliament; With an impartial statement of the privileges of the House of Commons, and of the liberty fo the subject: by Edward Christian, vii+98p, London, Pr. for T. Cadell, etc., 1810. (Lacks TOC & index. Christian, 1758-1823, was a barrister, the Chief justice of the Island of Ely, and Downing Prof. of the Laws of England at Cambridge. It is also noteworthy that Edward was the elder brother of Fletcher Christian, leader of the Mutiny on the Bounty. While public opinion in the mutiny case was originally on the side of Captain Bligh, the publication of the “Minutes” of the Bounty Court-Martial by Stephen Barney in 1794, along with an Appendix by Edward Christian, was a major factor in turning the tide of public opinion against Bligh and permanently tarnishing his reputation. The print text of this title was scanned from Lincoln’s Inn Library pamphlet volume Carlton 125, foliated pagination 40A to 92B.)
