Assembly. Comm. of the Assembly. Letter to Wm. Johnson, 1762-06-22 (MS)

[This is very difficult reading. Much of the ink is gone, and each sheet has a triangle of text loss in the lower left corner. Important words are illegible or gone.] Wrapper: Copy of a letter from a committee of the Assembly to Sir Wm. Johnson, Easton, June 22, 1762.Apparently, Johnson had questioned the attendance of the Committee at the negotiations. They protested that their only concern was the peace of the Province. They thought some facts were missing from the proceedings. They did not think the treaty of 1686 included land that was assumed to be included during later negotiations in the 1730s, especially as concerned the Lehigh Mountains. They laid out seven points, which would be very interesting if one could only read them. They were strongly of the opinion that the amount of land recorded in the day and a half journey section was completely wrong. If the matter had to be submitted to the King, they wanted their letter to be part of the package, but if it could be settled before that, the text of their response is not complete. Eight men signed the letter. (Digitized from a microfilm copy held at the Pennsylvania State Historical Society)
