1757-02-16, W. Johnson's instructions to G. Croghan (MS)
Wrapper: February 16, 1757 Sir Wm. Johnson's instructions Copy. Header: Instructions to George Croghan, Esquire. Croghan was to remind the
Delaware and Shawnee in the strongest terms of their promises on multiple occasions to lay down the hatchet and return prisoners. Show them that it was in
their best interest to live in peace with the English. Listen to any grievances and fix what you can. Johnson would send some Six Nations chiefs to
help him argue the case for turning the edge of the hatchet toward the French and returning any prisoners. Report to the Earl of Loudon or Colonel
Stanwix. Use your best judgment, be open and friendly, then report to me as soon as you can. Johnson signed the instructions on 16th February 1757.
