1737, Weiser, Narrative of negotiations with the Five Nations (MS)
Narrative of the negotiations with the Indians of the Six Nations in April 1737. Conrad Weiser left his home on February 27 for Onondaga with one
other man. The weather was terrible, the snow was deep, and the rivers were running high. After a pause in eastern Pennsylvania, Weiser left again on
March 18 through heavy snow, little food, and high water to arrive in Onondaga on April 10. He sent wampum and a message asking the chiefs to come to
see him; when the chiefs arrived, he met with them. First article: The Governor of Virginia invited the Nations to come to Williamsburg to make
peace with the Cherokees and Cataquees [?]. Weiser laid out considerable wampum to make the invitation real. Second article: The Governor of
Pennsylvania had sent Weiser to hold the war hatchet until the Six Nations could make peace with their enemies. More wampum. After consideration, the Nations
said it was too dangerous to go to Williamsburg, but it would be good if everyone could come to Albany, where everyone could be safe. The
negotiations had to be in public. The Nations were willing to give up the hatchet for one summer and one winter. They did not believe the Cataquees wanted
peace--they were not trustworthy. They did not know the Cherokees at all. Earlier, another messenger had come from the Governor of New York with
exactly the same message, so it must be genuine. On April 18, Weiser left to go home, this time with an Indian escort that used canoes to speed up the
journey. The group saw some Shawnees along the way who told about atrocities by the Cataquees; they asked Weiser to contact the Governor of Virginia to
stop the killing. Weiser arrived home on May 1, having been away for two months. (Digitized from a microfilm copy held at the Pennsylvania State
