1756?, Speech of Maj. Gen. W. Shirley to the Indians of the Six Nations (MS)
Wrapper: Copy The speech of His Excellency General Shirley to the Indians of the Six Nations. Header: The speech of His Excellency Major General
William Shirley, General and Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's forces in North America to the sachems and warriors of the Six Nations. Sadly,
there is no date. Shirley presented himself to the Nations through General Johnson, whom he had ordered to look after the Nation's interests. He urged
the Nations not to fear the coming fight--there were many more English than French. The next two pages were difficult to impossible to read, which
is very disappointing. Part of it seemed to be about the situation in Pennsylvania, but the rest is illegible. The final section exhorted the Nations
to join the fight, because then their neighbors would know they were still able to conquer them. (Digitized from a microfilm copy held at the
Pennsylvania State Historical Society)
