1753-12-27, Letter from Rev. Hawley to Hon. Wm. Johnson (MS)
|
|
Header: Copy of a letter of the Rev. Hawley at Onehughquagery to the Honorable Wm. Johnson dated Onehughquagery, December 27, 1753. The sachems who took Johnson's message to the Delawares asked Hawley to write. The sachems described some events on the river and in the Wyomissing area that may have precipitated the killing. Hawley also copied a direct answer from the Delawares. They resented being called subject to the Five Nations, but they would stop attacking if their prisoners were released to them. If not, the violence might continue. In a postscript, Hawley asked for a fort and garrison. (Digitized from a microfilm copy held at the Pennsylvania State Historical Society)
