Joint Select Comm. on the Defalcation of B.D. Peck. Report, 1860
Report of the Joint Select Committee on the defalcation of Benj. D. Peck, late Treasurer of the State of Maine, 1860. The fraud took place in the
1850s, but the its discovery and the subsequent investigation (nearly fifty hearings) took a long time. The report was over sixty pages. The Committee
concluded than Mr. Peck owed the state just over $94,000. He pled guilty and was very forthcoming in his testimony. He made many loans of state money
to friends and his bondsmen and it spiraled into an unbelievably complicated fraud. The Committee eventually decided which bondsmen had to pay large
sums to replace the state's money.(Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
