Senate. Comm. on Education. Act for the establishment of a State Normal School, 1857
Thirty-sixth Legislature. Senate. No. 8. An Act for the establishment of a State Normal School, 1857. The school would train teachers for the
common schools. There would be six trustees with staggered terms who would serve without pay. The trustees would pick the location for the school, come
up with the financial requirements, decide on the curriculum, etc. They could accept gifts of real estate or buildings. Students who declared for
teaching in Maine could come for free; those who did not do that had to pay tuition. There would be an appropriation of $3,000/year for ten years.
