Description and Holding Information
Maine State Library. Annual report of the State Librarian ..., 1st (1861)-
**1861 First annual report of the State Librarian to the Legislature of Maine with a list of new books for the year 1861. On January 20, 1862, Mr.
Stacey presented the library's statute and regulations, the Library Committee members, and his book spending. He attached nine pages of a list of
holdings. The books have been put in order. He was trying to fill incomplete sets. The exchange system had faltered because of the war. He did not
ask for extra money, but hoped improvements might be possible after the war. **1862 Second ... for the year 1862. There was a list of Trustees and
members of the Standing Committee, which continued in all subsequent reports. He spent $3 more than he had, but presented 14 p. of holdings. There was
a list of appropriations for the library from 1839-1862. The catalog had been completed. **1863 3rd ... for 1863. Mr. Stacey reported on
January 20, 1864. He bought a lot of reports of cases from several states to try to complete sets. There were exchanges with twenty states and Canada.
The appropriation was $800; he spent 746; 574 volumes added. He pointed out that all other state libraries except one spent over $2,000/yr. on new
books. **1864 4th ... for 1864. Mr. Stacey reported on January 21, 1865. He had spent $619 of his $800 appropriation, but there were outstanding
orders. 106 volumes were added and 5 volumes disappeared. The books were suffering from lack of protected shelves and overcrowding. The newspapers needed
to be bound and the library needed an acquisition plan. **1865 5th ... for 1865. Mr. Stacey reported on January 18, 1866. He had spent $835, added
646 volumes, 4 disappeared. Postage was an issue because the franking privilege was lost. The library had received no exchanges from "insurgent
states." He had been working on an index to state documents. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine Historical Society
Library, the Maine State Library, and the Library of Congress).
