Bank Commissioners. Report on the subject of free banking, 1852 (1857 reprinting)
|
|
Thirty-sixth Legislature. Senate. No. 6. Report of the Bank Commissioners on the subject of free banking made to the Thirty-first Legislature in compliance with an order passed on August 28, 1849. The report was submitted on January 16, 1852. [Provided for the Thirty-sixth Legislature as a reprint.] The men ran through the history of currency circulation in the United States. Maine had to back up one third of its circulating currency in specie. There was no national bank to help control fluctuations, so that made life difficult. They described the New York experience as a cautionary tale of free banking; they did not want to see Maine follow that path. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
