1864-03-01, Papers relating to the National Cemetery at Gettysburg
SEE ALSO 56495 Forty-third Legislature. House. No. 16. On March 1, 1864, Governor Cony sent documents about the Soldiers' National Cemetery in
Gettysburg. Each northern state sent a representative; Mr. Norris was Maine's Commissioner. The Board of Trustees held its first meeting December 17,
1863. The group decided on its organization, accepted a design for the cemetery, and determined the initial contribution from each state--Maine's was
$2,102.50, plus an annual amount not yet determined. Nearly 3,000 bodies had been exhumed in preparation for burial in the new cemetery. (Digitized
from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Maine State Library and the Library of Congress).
