Thirty-seventh Legislature. House. No. 4 Memorial of the Maine State Agricultural Society for the adoption of measures for the settlement and sale of the public lands of Maine, 1857. The Legislature had received a similar document from citizens last year; the Society wanted to add its voice. The wonderful resources of the state were languishing for want of development. There were several pages comparing Maine to England and other states in terms of agricultural and industrial production. Maine did not have adequate railroads, water transport, or roads to get its products to market; that inhibited anyone from coming to Maine to make their fortune. Certainly the State was reluctant to take on debt to fund improvements, but the amount of public land that could be sold was so large that debt would not be necessary. (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Library of Congress).
