|
|
The law of civil procedure in force in Panama and the Canal Zone: translated by Frank L. Joannini, vii+289p, Wash., D.C., Isthmian Canal Commission, July, 1905. (A TOC starts on p. iii. Lacks index. The “code” being translated here derived from Article 1 of Law 57 adopted in 1887 for a federal entity, the “Granadine Confederation”; i.e., Colombia, Panama and small parts of today’s Ecuador and Venezuela. At that time the Isthmus region was joined in an uneasy “federal union” with Colombia, then called the Republic of New Grenada. For both historical and geographic reasons, the relationship was uneasy, especially since the Isthmus region had been sporadically officially independent from the “Granadine Confederation” during the decade of 1831-41. Panama finally became permanently independent from Colombia on 3 Nov. 1903.)
