1868?, Objections to the S. Carolina Constitution
|

The Respectful Remonstrance on behalf of the White People of South Carolina against the Constitution of the late convention (1868) of that state, now
submitted to Congress for ratification. Essentially the authors selected various sections of the proposed constitution (which was required after the
United States Congress rejected the prior 1865 version) and made numerous comments and suggestions regarding same. Significantly, page 6 argued that
Section 2 of Article VIII "Enfranchises every male [N]egro...and disenfranchises every white man who has held office in South Carolina....The
superior race is to be made subservient to the inferior." The authors suggested a substitute, based on a prior resolution which would allow the "colored
population" the right of suffrage, under "proper qualifications as to property and intelligence." (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally
