Auditor. Special report on condition of several railroad companies, 1843
Pub. Doc. No. 44 Special report of the Auditor of State [Ohio] in conformity to a resolution of the last General Assembly on the condition of the
several railroad companies to which the credit of the state has been loaned. January 5, 1843. The Auditor and his clerk did the investigations from
April to December of 1842. It appeared to be an arduous process. Six railroads were examined and only one was above reproach. There was considerable
fraud uncovered; some of the roads created banks for themselves, and quite literally printed money. There were all sorts of shenanigans with land
transfers and self-aggrandizement. It was a depressing report.
