Doc. No. 31 Special report of the Warden of the Penitentiary, in reply to a resolution of the House relative to convict labor, etc. In House,
December 29, 1841. The House asked for details on convict labor and contracts to see if the work undercut those in the same business on the outside. The
Warden listed fourteen fields of endeavor and seven contractors. The prisoners were paid between 32-50 cents/day. Mr. Van Hook felt it would be
impossible to keep the prisoners busy without competing with someone.
