Board of Public Works. Special report on management of the National Road, 1841
Doc. No. 51 Special report of the Board of Public Works [Ohio] relating to the management of the National Road in answer to a resolution of the
House. February 3, 1841. How many people were paid to work on the Road, salaries, any perquisites for workers, toll figures. The road was divided
into eastern and western divisions, each with a superintendent who made $1,000/yr. Each managed his section a little differently, but mostly relied on
day labor to keep the road in good condition. There were eleven gates on the east half and 8 gates on the west half, but the presentation of toll data
is confusing. There were no perquisites for any workers.
