Board of Public Works. Special report on survey for a canal, 1840
Doc. No. 54 Special report of the Board of Public Works [Ohio], transmitting the report of the engineer employed to survey a route for a canal from
Columbus to Lake Erie through the valley of the Scioto, Olentangey, and Sandusky Rivers, under a resolution of the last General Assembly. January
10, 1840. George Morton reported on January 9, 1840 on the survey he made for the Central Canal, beginning in Sandusky. He had to examine several
ridges that stood in the way of southward progress. He said Ohio had learned to build big and build well; cheap did not mean economical. He specified
the size, materials, and method of construction of thirteen divisions of the route. He then described dams and feeders to the main canal. Pages 22-28
were the estimate charts for 126 miles of canal. Pages 30-31 were the recapitulation tables.
