Document No. 41 Second annual report of the State House Commissioners; made to the thirty-eighth General Assembly, December 28, 1839. The
Commissioners visited the state houses of several eastern states. Construction had finally begun on a building that would house the Legislature, several
executive offices, and the Library. The original fence was replaced to prevent the escape of convicts working on the building. The stone foundation was
nearly complete. The Commissioners recommended an appropriation of $30,000 for the next construction season. There were sixteen pages of financials:
Date, Labor & materials, Number [of invoice], Amount, Amount Paid. The final page was a recapitulation.
