Description and Holding Information
Auditor. Special report on public works expenditures, 1839
Document No. 31 Special report of the Auditor of the State [Ohio] in reply to a resolution of the House, calling for information relative to the
expense for public works of the State. December 20, 1839. In a somewhat testy rely, the Auditor sent figures on eight canals and a road which came to
$8,267,787 later revised [see p. 10] to $10,618,170. Another table showed State subscriptions to public works of one and one-half pages; about half
the amount subscribed had been paid. The auditor said many expenses did not pass through his office and payments were made that he knew nothing about.
There was a table of borrowings up to $9,000,000, mostly at 6% and mostly due in 1860.
