Great Miami Turnpike Company. Annual report, <1839>-
**Document No. 33 Annual report of the Great Miami Turnpike company: December 28, 1839. The Company reported in obedience to the law. It had
twenty-eight miles of road under contract. It had made its report to the State Auditor, which showed both private and state money involved; the company
was in the black. Construction progressed as money came in. **Document No. 35 Annual report of the Great Miami Turnpike Company [December 28, 1840]
The Company reported that just short of thirty-seven miles had been completed and would begin tolling in the spring. Based on experience, the total
cost of the project would be about $177,000, so about $61,000 had to be found. However, the state would no longer subscribe to roads, so the company
decided to arrange with contractors to pay over several years so that tolls could pay the costs. The financials followed. **Document No. 43 Report
of the Great Miami Turnpike Company [1841] The plan to begin tolling last spring fell apart. The cost to complete the turnpike were now projected to
be $183,000, so the Company had to agree to pay 6% interest on contracts stretching from one to ten years. The road should be completed in a short
time. **Document No. 48 Report of the Great Miami Turnpike Company. On November 15, 1842, the Company submitted its report. The road was completed
at a total cost of $183,646. Tolls so far had amounted to $5269.77. The Company was $66,000 in debt and had worked with the court to divide the
tolls among the creditors. **Document No. 52 Annual report of the Great Miami Turnpike Company [as of November 15, 1843.] Tolls for the year were
$7,137, but nearly all of it was eaten up with repairs and debt reduction. Heavy freight wagons had proved to be very destructive to the roads. Should
the Company charge a higher toll based on load weight or the number of horses? **Document No. 59 Annual report of the Great Miami Turnpike Company
[as of November 15, 1844] The year's tolls were $8,447. One law suit had been paid off.
