September 15, 1857 contract between William Morrell and the Cape Fear and Deep River Navigation Company. This agreement provided that Morrell would
construct or repair the slack water works of the company from Fayetteville, on the Cape Fear River, to the uppermost lock and dam, by Hancock's mills,
