1848, Senate. Bill for relief of purchasers of Cherokee lands
1848 Report of the Joint Select Committee on Cherokee lands and proposed the following Senate bill to provide relief for the purchases of Cherokee
lands. These lands were acquired in 1835 from the federal government and purchasers paid an inflated price due to the initial presence of U.S. troops,
stationed to forcibly remove the Cherokees. This bill adjusted the price to a new valuation more consistent with their actual worth. (Digitized from
a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the Library of Congress).
