1775, Gov. Martin's speech & Assembly's reply
|
|
April 4, 1775 speech of North Carolina Governor Josiah Martin to the General Assembly, and a response from the assembly. The governor provided typical instructions regarding the governance of the province, but was also critical of the unrest and actions by the Congressional Congress. The assembly, in response, reiterated that the members were good subjects, but indicated that its citizen were subjected to unconstitutional acts by the British Parliament and that the Congressional Congress' petition to the King was welcomed and not offensive to him. Attached resolutions of the Assembly approved of the proceedings of the Continental Congress and thanked the North Carolina delegates for their service.
