1850, Senate. Resolutions concerning federal Constitution
1850 Senate resolution which claimed the right of secession under the federal Constitution, but indicated that this was an extreme step. The
resolution further warned that the recently enacted fugitive slave bill should not be altered in Congress, as slaves were property and the federal government
had a duty to protect property for the citizens. The resolution also stated that there was an injustice done to the slave-holding states by allowing
California into the Union and that steps needed to be taken to protect slaves taking into a non-slave holding states and territories. (Digitized
from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the Library of Congress).
