Description and Holding Information
1744, Surrender of 7/8 parts of Carolina to H.M.
1744 Surrender of seven-eighth parts of Carolina from Lord Carteret (while retaining one-eighth part) to King George II. Of note, the Crown bought
out the seven other proprietors for £22,500 in 1729, approximately the amount they had spent on the colony. Carteret refused to sell and retained his
title and quit-rents until after the Revolutionary War, when his heirs received compensation. See LLMC #21247 for related material. (Digitized
from a microfilm copy of titles originally held by the University of North Carolina Library).
