1843, Memorial on lake harbors and commerce [Ohio doc.]
Pub. Doc. No. 56 Message from the Governor [Ohio] transmitting a memorial and resolution from the State of Michigan relative to lake harbors and
the commerce of the lakes. February 6, 1843. There had been heavy storms, destructive to both life and property, in 1842--"the gales of November."
Michigan appealed to Congress for money to finish the coastal survey, build lighthouses, and create safe harbors. The memorial cited figures for trade,
loss of life, and loss of property to bolster its arguments. It also discussed the need, potential benefits, and costs, of a canal at Sault Ste.
Marie. Michigan invited other states, especially those around the lakes, to join the petition.
