Description and Holding Information
1835-42, Harrington's Chancery reports, 2nd ed.
Reports of cases determined in the Court of Chancery of the State of Michigan, by E. Burke Harrington: 2nd ed., with notes and references to later
decisions, by Thomas M. Cooley, xiv+491p, Chicago, Callaghan, 1882. (These reports cover all of the decisions of Judge Elon Farnsworth, Chancellor from
the establishment of a separate Chancery Court by the Michigan Constitution of 1835 till his resignation for reasons of health in March 1842. The
publication of Harrington's work was substantially delayed by a fire in the printery in 1841, which destroyed part of the manuscript. According to Cooley,
given Harrington's failing health, much of the re-write was “left to the hands of clerks imperfectly qualified to perform it. An effort has been made
to improve some of the statements of cases, but this has not always been practicable without access to the original papers not now attainable.” —
Pref. to 2nd ed., p. ix. The pagination of the first edition is preserved at the bottom of each 2nd ed. page.)
