Description and Holding Information
Western Sun, 1807-<1816>
The Western Sun was a weekly newspaper of record, also the territorial printer, in Vincennes, Indiana, publishing the Acts of Congress, territorial
documents, pending tax sales, legal notices, local and foreign news, local notes, poetry, federal land sales, lists of letters that had not been
claimed, some fiction, and uplifting essays. Most issues were four pages. The issues appear to be in bound volumes and are difficult to read for that and
other reasons. Many page 1 sheets are of poor to very poor quality. The publication of the federal laws was the editor's bread and butter and nearly
always occupied pages one and two of any issue. Territorial publications were not frequent. There were advertisements, but they were usually small
and there weren't really very many. Among the most frequent ads were those for patent medicines. Nearly every issue had at least one ad for an
escaped enslaved male and runaway horses. Someone has been through all the issues and made check marks and/or numbers beside many paragraphs. This
sometimes caused slight loss of information because of blots. To avoid endless repetition, many information categories are mentioned only once, but they
appeared many times in other issues. **Western Sun Vol. 1, no. 2-4 (July 2-July 25, 1807) Page 1 of issues 2-4 were of poor quality, as was p. 3 of no.
