Wabash and Erie Canal Commissioners. Report, 1831
House of Representatives [Indiana] Saturday, December 17, 1831. Report of the Commissioners of the Wabash and Erie Canal. As with other states,
Indiana received a substantial grant of land from the federal government so the sales of said land could finance the Wabash and Erie Canal, a connection
from Lake Erie to the Wabash River and then southwest to the Ohio River and the Mississippi. This route passed through easier territory than most
canals. Success, however, depended on Ohio constructing a short link from the Indiana line to the Lake and Ohio was not moving forward. There was a
long discussion about the value of the land because the state was trying to build the canal without imposing new taxes. There were time constraints
attached to the land grant that made the Commissioners nervous. Another bottleneck was an argument over whether it was better to build a railroad than a
canal. The Commissioners pointed out that it was cheaper to build a canal and it could carry heavier freight for less cost. The Commissioners
explained how to do the financing of the project and basically said, "Let's go!"
