1856-12-08, Louisiana vs. Harrison
December 8, 1856 decision of the Supreme Court of Louisiana in Louisiana v. Harrison. In that case, the court examined if the Act of 15th of March,
1855, entitled “ an Act relative to slaves and free colored persons,” was constitutional. The basis of the claim was because its title expressed two
distinct groups: slaves and free colored persons, which the majority noted was "in the eye of the Louisiana law, there is, ... all the difference
between a free man of color and a slave, that there is between a white man and a slave." Of note the law was found unconstitutional. (Digitized from a
microfilm copy of titles originally held by the Library of Congress).
