|
Official register of the Louisiana State University and the Agricultural and Mechanical College. Baton Rouge, La. Military Organization. Session 1877-78. At the bottom of the page was a long quote in tiny print about the idea of a university. The book was tightly bound, so many pages have information cut off because the book could not be flat. The University opened in Alexandria in 1860 as a land grant school on the military model. When the first building burned in 1869, the school went to Baton Rouge and stayed there. The Agricultural and Mechanical School opened New Orleans in 1874, but merged with LSU in 1877. The register listed the faculty--only 4 men--and an alphabetical roll of students with name, residence, date of entry, course of study, and remarks. Many students left in 1878, no reason given. Another table showed everyone's grades. Beginning on p. 17, the courses of study were listed and detailed. The administration was proud of how little it cost to come to school--no more than $200/year. P. 85 listed the Agricultural and Mechanical faculty of eight men, with three vacancies and schedules of classes and exams. There were several pages of requests for donations, followed by six pages of donors. There were the usual descriptions of courses. The Appendix was a twenty-one page commencement address that compared Egypt and Louisiana because of the river. There was an index to the catalog.
