Auditor of Public Accounts. Special report on swamp and overflowed lands, 1860
Special report of the Auditor of Public Accounts, in relation to swamp and overflow lands, to the Legislature of the State of Louisiana. Baton Rouge
: J.M. Taylor, 1860. The report showed the receipts from the sale of swamp and overflow lands and amounts paid out of the Levee and Drainage Fund
from 1852-1859. The state sold ca. 1,750,000 acres for $1.25/acre for a rounded total of $2,200,000. More waterlogged areas sold for lesser prices,
but still netted $144,000. Total sale were $2,342,568 and received into the Treasury was $2,418,119. There was no explanation of the discrepancy. The
Levee and Drainage people spent $832,000 on several pages of projects. Many thousands of acres of swamp land were erroneously sold, so $75,000 had
to be refunded.
