Swamp Land District 2. Commissioner's special report, 1858-03
Special report of the Commissioner of the Second Swamp Land District on Bayou Plaquemine. The Bayou began about 225 miles above the Mississippi
River mouth, ran 11 1/2 miles the southwest to the Grand River, to drain over 276,000 acres of land with a fall of about 20 feet. Huge amounts of
driftwood, that eventually became rafts, clogged the opening to the Bayou and many other streams in the area. The Commissioner was in favor of closing off
the Bayou somehow so as to re-direct the wood farther downstream and listed five advantages to the action.
