Senate No. 5 Legislature 1845. Report of the Select Committee on Indian Affairs. January 31, 1845. [Michigan] The report started out considering how to control liquor sales to the Ottawa and Chippewa, but soon became a history of the federal control of the portions of the state still held by the tribes. In 1842, the Native Americans ceded control of the lower peninsula to the State of Michigan, but the federal government handled all the transfer and shut out the State officials. The Committee was indignant about this arrangement and had drafted resolutions against it, but the text was not present.
