House. Comm. on Agriculture and Manufactures. Report, 1844
|
|
House No. 1 Legislature 1844. Report of the Committee on Agriculture and Manufactures. [1844? Michigan] The Committee was opposed to increasing the federal protective tariff. Local taxes were one thing, but adding federal taxes was onerous. The Committee felt the tariff benefited the eastern states more than the western ones; Michigan needed more farmers, not more factories. It proposed a resolution directing the Congressional delegation to vote for a modified tariff and to have it operate equally around the country.
