Auditor. Communication on depreciated paper … 1842
Doc. No. 64 Communication from Auditor of State [Ohio] relative to depreciated bank paper, the Literary Fund, and drafts to turnpike companies. On
February 10, 1842, the Auditor sent three problems to the Legislature that he thought they alone had the power to remedy. Toll collectors were
required to forward their receipts via a bank once a month, but many banks refused to accept paper money and since so many bank had gone under, the money
wasn't worth the paper it was printed on. The Literary Fund had been the beneficiary of certain fees, but the Fund had been repealed, so what should
he do with the $5,500 sitting in the Treasury? Warrants to various construction projects could not be honored because there was no money, but the
whole situation grew more confused and contentious by the day, so he asked for help in resolving the issues.
