Board of Canal Fund Commissioners. Special report on sale of state stock … 1841
|
|
Doc. No. 66 Special report of the Commissioners of the Canal Fund [Ohio] in reply to a resolution of the House relative to the sale of stock, etc. for the purpose of procuring funds to prosecute the public works. House, March 2, 1841. The Commissioners said there was just no market for the stock--they had tried. It might be possible to get short term loans in Europe by paying high interest rates. Another option, also not great, was getting post notes on local banks. The Commissioners suggested many rules and regulations for this option. The post notes were the best of a bad bargain. There was still a bright side--tolls on two of the canals more than paid the interest charges on their loans, and all the other projects but one should be finished during the year.
