Doc. No. 74 Special report of the Canal Fund Commissioners [Ohio], in reply to a resolution of the House relative to their connection with the
North American Trust and Banking Company. February 3, 1840. The Commissioners contracted with this company to sell stock whose proceeds the
Commissioners would use to pay interest that was soon to come due. When the national economy ran into trouble, so did North American, so the state might have to
default. Complicated arrangement were discussed in London and New York and a solution determined with North American, but the Legislature was
rightfully concerned if it would all work out.
