William. Communication from engineer of Wabash & Erie Canal to Ohio Legislature, 1840
Doc. No. 72 Communication from the Governor [Ohio] transmitting resolutions from the Legislature of Indiana, and a communication from the Chief
Engineer of that state in relation to he Wabash and Erie Canal. January 31, 1840. [Pages 1-4 were not present] The Legislature of Indiana wanted to
get the Canal done. Because each state had accepted a land grant for the project, each was obliged to build its part of the Canal. By next October,
Indiana would have complete 144 miles, but the Canal would have limited utility without an outlet to Lake Erie. The document listed the trade
opportunities and the toll possibilities, basically urging Ohio to get busy. Indiana also submitted a resolution urging their State Engineer to go to Columbus
to lobby for the Canal. The resolution also noted the parts that had been finished were too narrow.
