Doc. No. 56 Special report of the Bank Commissioners [Ohio] in reply to a resolution of the House. January 13, 1840. The House wanted to know if
any Ohio banks issued paper money that was not redeemable in specie, or not payable on demand. The Commissioners investigated and found eleven
institutions had issued paper money, most often payable in current bank notes, not specie. Some notes could only be redeemed after a certain date. No
bank ever asked permission to make the issues.
