Bank Commissioners. Special report on transportation of specie, 1839
|
|
Document No. 38 Special report of the Bank Commissioners in reply to a Resolution of the House asking for information in relation to the transportation and sale of specie by certain banks therein named. December 28, 1839. The Resolution suggested two banks in Ohio were sending specie east to be sold at a profit. The Commissioners determined it did happen and sent the responses of the banks in question. The bank in Zanesville sent a specific list of the specie it sent to Philadelphia for sale. The funds were deposited there to serve customers in the east. The Muskingum Bank sent $10,000 to Philadelphia for the same purpose. Each bank said this was a usual practice.
