SEE ALSO 43535 Report of the [House] Committee on City Finances. The Committee morphed into a Joint Committee with the Senate. The Committee
examined records and held hearings to investigate the amount of notes [which served as cash money] printed by the City of New Orleans. After the
investigation, the Committee believed that in December 1866, $3,631,409 remained in circulation. The experts who examined the books thought the figure was
$3,745,332. One set of printing plates had been lost, which raised the real possibility of even more notes in circulation. The City's total debt was
on top of p.2: $13,701,707. The report detailed other complicated transactions with what may or may not have been real money. Still, it conceded the
City was in good financial condition, notwithstanding the war.
