House. Comm. on Commerce and Manufactures. Report, 1860
Report of the Committee on Commerce and Manufactures to the House of Representatives of the State of Louisiana. Baton Rouge : J.M. Taylor, 1860.
The Committee members inspected several government functions. There was an urgent need to understand the Mississippi shipping channel to get large
ships to New Orleans. The Board of Public Works should develop a plan to remove obstructions and deepen the channel. The merchants needed to develop a
connection with Liverpool. Data about pilots followed. Over 1,000 ships came in and out last year. The Committee submitted questions to the Board of
Public Health about quarantine. The Board said the City government would not help with quarantine measures. There needed to be a quarantine
facility at the Atchafalaya station. The Board sent a financial report. There were interrogatories for the Harbor Master also. Only one shipping company
refused to pay the harbor fees and the case was going to the Supreme Court. 866,000 tons of cargo came to the port that year. All vessels got health
permits. There was a financial table and a tasks table.
