Commissioners of Education. Report on establishing a Seminary of practical arts, 1827
|

SEE ALSO 51820 H.R. No. 5 The Commissioners of Education submitted their previous report and two bills on a Seminary of Practical Arts and Sciences, first in 1825 with a report in January of 1826, and now with another report on January 11, 1827. These men desperately needed an editor to manage their purple prose! There was presently a huge interest in education and it was odd that a country that so respected labor and the useful arts, had no school for those who wanted to learn. The Commission thought grafting such a school onto an existing facility was a mistake. They also chided those who thought only the primary schools should be supported. The primary schools needed good teachers and modern textbooks, but no institution of higher education was in place to provide them. For about $30,000, the state could take the lead in building such a facility. The Commissioners were sure the school would be very popular and if the state did nothing, the economy would fall behind. Time's a-wasting! (Digitized from a microfilm copy of title originally held by the Massachusetts State Library).
